On carrying it all yourself, the strength you inherited, and one conversation to have this week

THE IDEA

Is there something on your plate right now that feels like it is all on you?

I have felt that too. It is a heavy way to carry a thing.

Humility helps you remember you are part of a story that started before you and continues after you.

You inherited strength, sacrifice, and lessons you may not know about yet.
Remembering that does not shrink you. It steadies you.

THE STUDY

Take a few seconds and picture your grandparents, and the generation before them. What was an ordinary day like? What work did they do? What did they get through?

In 2011, psychologist Peter Fischer and his colleagues ran a set of experiments on what they called the ancestor effect. Participants who spent a few minutes thinking about their ancestors went on to perform better on a test than participants who thought about a recent shopping trip. The gap was meaningful, roughly 14 correct answers out of 16 compared with 10.

They did not get smarter in those few minutes. They got grounded. Knowing you are part of something bigger does not make you smaller. It gives you something to stand on.

That is Humble Power.

THE QUICK WIN

Call a parent, grandparent, or another older family member this week and ask one question:
What times truly tested you, and what did you learn about yourself?

hat question comes from Brendon Burchard, who interviewed his dad before he passed away to preserve his stories for their family. He remains grateful he did it.

You will find the full list in Chapter 3. You do not need the whole list to start. One question, asked with real interest, can open a conversation you will be glad you had. Their story may show you where your own strength came from.

All my best,
Ethan
